This way they know they will get a return on the books rather than gambling on something new and original.
Wise words from the person who writes Sherlock Holmes comics and got her start on Tom Strong.
Pretty much exactly what I said in the main thread. C'est la vie...
So apparently I have a blog now?

DC are doing new things all the time. They have an entire imprint dedicated to it. Doing one doesn't preclude doing the other.
Have to say I agree. While I can see the appeal of a Cooke/Conner Silk Spectre, I'd prefer a Cooke/Conner Something Entirely New.
“All companies are pyramid schemes, pure and simple. The people at the bottom of the pyramid, the creators, labour on behalf of the people at the top, the publishers. Money, like hot air, rises…. With a little effort, any creator can learn to do what a publisher does. No publisher could ever learn in a million years to do what a creator does. That’s why contracts exist. Without contracts, publishers have nothing. Without contracts, creators have everything.” - Dave Sim, 1993
Im conflicted on this
One one hand i totally agree with what she is saying. On the other, the first thing i saw of hers was Albion, a comic using charecters created by other people years ago and telling a new story with them, which seems a bit like Before Watchmen to me.
It's not and "either/or" situation. Why can't DC do all the above?
I'm starting to have some mild and cautious interest in these Watchmen books as a fan, but I clearly realize its a no brainier from a business perspective. We all know these books will sell well. And maybe that will bring in extra revenues so DC can do some of those other things Leah is talking about. Let's remember, this isnt an industry awash with extra cash flow.
I think we need to think about this stuff the right way. Watchman exists because somebody thought it would sell comics and make money. That money goes to salary/shareholders etc.. Before Watchman exists for the exact same reason. A Watchman GN is going to sell more than a new property and it is a simple equation.
The only people who every cry "ART" are the people with no financial interest in the results. You can bet that she would be singing a much different tune if she owned the rights.
