You're making a lot of assumptions there. There's no guarantee that your preferred way would be more successful or that your measurement of success is accurate. As alluded to below, the biggest purpose of the ad isn't to get a lot of people trading in manga, but to get noticed.

For those that are taking shots at them for thinking this is really judgmental: before the revelation that they were donating to charity, what did you think they were going to do with them? Burn the manga?

I know he's joking with the "citizen" line, but if he weren't, would it be legal? Can the owner of a business refuse to serve illegal immigrants? Or allow them to participate in a particular promotion such as this one?

I really didn't even think of any 'racism' in comparing Cyborg to Obama. After all those bad caricatured when every other comic had him on the cover, this might as well be Obama.

Though I guess his ears could be bigger. That would have helped.

Cyborg's name isn't Robot, so they clearly didn't slap part of his name on Obama. They took what he looks like or is and made a name out of that. So it'd be Oprlien (Oprah/Alien) or Striprah (stripper/Oprah).
Now that's just silly. We all know that Obama isn't already a robot. He's just a terrorist born in Nigeria sent here to destroy America as a sleeper agent.

Yet we don't know for certain that Oprah isn't an alien reptoid sent here to control America by the alien reptoid Jewish banker Illuminati conspiracy that is behind our government. We really don't know how far their scaly claws reach.

And this is why Rand Paul needs to help repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964! We have to give racist business the right to deny them Mexicans service.

Heh. I joke.. though I kinda do agree with him. I don't think we need laws anymore to stop business who refuse service to people based on race. I believe that the American public does not need the government to stop such racism anymore. I believe that if a business does have such racist policies, it should not be the government and law enforcement who shuts them down. I believe the American people can take it into their own hands to boycott and protest such an establishment and make them realize their ignorance. Unless it is a public office or place, I don't see why the government needs to be called in to stop such practices in a private institution. At least at this point in history, I don't think we're at the crisis point we were in the 60s. I can understand why then government needed to step in. Of course, many places in government and public areas had such segregation and discrimination too.

Hey... can I get this to work for me? I want to be allowed into every women's rest room on campus and into my school's Black Engineering Student Society and Asian Student Union. If they don't let me in. Dat's discrimination based on my race and gender and I'm going to have the government force them to let me in.

It's odd: businesses have the right to refuse to service a customer in general, unless it is a form of discrimination that is protected against under the law. Only offering promotional goods to citizens isn't something that would be protected against under the law.

Of course, this is all for hypothetical discussion, because I'm sure A Comic Shop doesn't intend to make anyone prove citizenship. It's just another gag related to the Obama gimmick.
