Default Is This The Greatest Dark Horse Presents Ever?

Yesterday, from Dark Horse Comics, came the eighth issue of Dark Horse Presents. Now over the years, that series has seen the birth of the likes of Concrete, The Mask, Hellboy, Sin City, Next Men and so much more. It has anunquestionablepedigree. But what makes today's issue quite so special?

Well, first it has a BPRD strip by Mike Mignola, John Arcudi and Duncan Fegredo, with characters in a world after the death of Hellboy.

There's a new chapter of Beasts Of Burden by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson.

There's the first chapter of Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson's new crerator owned ongoing series, The Massive.

There's one off called Time To Live with Burke & Hare's Martin Conaghan and not-Ashes' Jimmy Broxton/James Hodgkins.

More of Neal Adams' Blood and Howard Chaykin's Marked Man

The first chapter of The Once And Future Tarzan by Alan Gordon and Thomas Yeates

    Concrete Park by Tony Puryear

Skulter by MJ Butler and Mark Wheatley

Oh, and towards the end, the beginning of a brand new comic, The Many Murders Of Miss Cranbourne drawn by Simon Rohrmuller and written by... me.

I read Dark Horse Presents at a perfect time, when I was exploring what comics could be and the stories they could tell. Dark Horse Presents opened me up to a whole load of possibilities. I discovered Concrete, Sin City, Next Men, Bacchus and much more. So while I can't say if this is the greatest issue of Dark Horse Presents for everyone, it certainly is for me.

Dark Horse Presents is 80 pages of comics for $7.99. That's the equivalent of a normal Marvel or DC comic for $1.99.

I thought this was a fantastic issue as well, and certainly the best of the latest run. I wasn't terribly impressed with the line up at first, but it's stealthily got better and better each month, and it's now one of the books I most look forward to.

I absolutely love anthology comics. I'm so glad Dark Horse brought this book back even if they're having to pad it out with at least one "filler" story as of this issue. (I kid, I kid...)

this just makes me want to drop all my Dark Horse titles, and the Hellboy/BPRD collecting ive done since the original iron shoes.

i can only hope they will reprint the DHP Hellboy/BPRD stories in a TPB, amongst themselves and not with material ive already bought. i guess im the fool for being a loyal Mignola reader who buys monthly. if i said fuck off and just read the trades i would not have to be frustrated by this shit. but in order to read follow-ups to major HB/BPRD arcs ive gotta pay $8 for 8 pages?!? thats some crappy way to treat the fans.

sure its like getting 4 comics for $2 each, but what if i only want that one 8 page bit? im stuck paying out the ass for material i dont want! i loathe anthologies (exception: Creepy)

sorry to rain on your parade Rich, congratulations on getting your work in DHP.
IF i was an anthology reader, id love DHP.

DHP is just plain awesome, tons of great material for not a lot of money. It blows my mind that people will drop $4 an issue on the same old superhero crossover nonsense and skip this fantastic book. And speaking of superheroes, I've always thought that this format would work great for franchises like Batman or X-Men. Instead of putting out four batman books a month, why not just make one big one like DHP and save the fans some money and the trouble of hunting down individual issues? Or better yet, just so people don't complain about buying material they don't want, reprint last month's four batman books in the DHP format. I guess they dabbled with this idea reprinting some of the new 52 books together, did anyone buy those?

Oh, and I'd like to see some more Star Wars and Conan stories in DHP.

I'm very happy that DHP increased their publishing frequency of late--two months was too long to wait for each issue.

I don't remember anyone complaining about the format so much as the quality.
