    Default Swipe File: J Scott Campbell And Dark Phoenix

    "Trying our some new art for Lilliana. Pen and ink, mixed media using photoshop. No unauthorized copying, duplicating or reposting without author's permission."

    Ironic, when compared to this.

    Dark Phoenix Publications can't see the problem however, deleting Facebook postings and just replying;
    Peter. First off the art was hand-drawn. Not traced. Second, it is the artist's interpretation of a Lilliana vampire wearing a corset. Whether the artist used a body pose from Gen13, Witchblade or Scooby Doo is sort of irrelevant and runs on the line of harassment to ask multiple times to get your way. Please be respectful of the fact that it's art that was put up to show our vision for a vampiric lineage. All posts which are deemed inappropriate will be deleted and offending posters blocked for their behavior.

    Peter. Peter. The artwork is a reflection of the artist's vision for the Lilliana. Many artists borrow body poses, it is especially common in the comic industry as it is in art classes. We will remind you to keep your comment constructive. No one is "cheating" anyone with this piece of art and copyright infringement is something we take very seriously.
    The posts by "Peter" however, are long since gone.

    In Swipe File we present two or more images that resemble each other to some degree. They may be homages, parodies, ironic appropriations, coincidences or works of the lightbox. We trust you, the reader, to make that judgment yourself? If you are unable to do so, please return your eyes to their maker before any further damage is done. The Swipe File doesn?t judge, it?s interested more in the process of creation, how work influences other work, how new work comes from old, and sometimes how the same ideas emerge simultaneously, as if their time has just come. The Swipe File was named after the advertising industry habit where writers and artistcollect images and lines they admire to inspire them in their work. It was swiped from the Comic Journal who originally ran this column, as well as the now defunct Swipe Of The Week website.

    The first one looks like a total swipe, and a blunt and brazen one at that, considering their "defence."

    As for the second one, this does seem like a pretty generic pose for Dredd and everything else seems normal regarding it features the same character and equipment, if any Chaykin's piece looks better and less generic to me.

    The first one is a total swipe. Hell, even Lilliana's hair is lacking lines where the sunglasses were in the Gen 13 pic.

    Whoever "Peter" is, you keep asking the questions, whatever they were. The artist seems to have blatantly swiped.

    The first douche is just a blatant plagiarist.

    Howard Chaykin is just being lazy in his old age, which is in some ways more disappointing. He probably had envisioned the cover image in his head, then thought to himself "Shit! I don't know what his motorcycle looks like!" It might be that he then found Lee Carter's work to use as reference, only to hurriedly copy it line-for-line, which is not the same as using it for reference. A legend doing a half-swipe is more disappointing than a no-talent nobody stealing 100 poses. I respected Chaykin literally for decades, but the last couple of years his stuff's kinda went to shit.

    Wow.. while most of your swipe files are images that look close to similar that first pic of Lilliana is a legit light table copy.

    I'd imagine that the original Campbell publication had a similar notice. Is Josh using another alias these days?

    Dark Phoenix Publishing or at least whoever is in charge of their facebook seem to be unabashed cowards. They are removing negative comments and using bully tactics to those who point out this is a blatant swipe. Pathetic really. Can anyone source the other images maybe? I am having doubts that this is an isolated incident.

    Actually, several people have been hunting down various things Dark Phoenix Publishing has done since late November. It's ranged from using photographs without permission, using a DeviantArt's tattoo design as their company logo without permission, swiping text for various FAQs, playtest document and other promotional materials, and all kinds of stuff. You can read about a lot of it here, which has links to the review.

    Also, the company's behavior and attitude regarding this are par for the course. They went from being unknown to catching the eye of a somewhat larger audience, now I think that spotlight on them has just gotten bigger and brighter. Thank you Bleeding Cool for running the story.

    I've seen Junior High students do better tracing jobs. Has J Scott sent them a cease and desist yet?
