Perhaps the most compelling and complex lead character in all of 2012's films, Mavis Gary is a brilliant collaboration between screenwriter Diablo Cody, director Jason Reitman and actor Charlize Theron, none of whom go for the easy option, all of whom add to the richness.
A sci-fi rom-com of ideas. You don't see many of those. Nor do you see many films starring Emma Caufield either, but I enjoyed Timer on both counts. The central conceit leaves a few loose ends but it's used for its fun, sweet metaphorical values.
Cameron Crowe finally made another film, and it's a deceptively sentimental and forward affair. We Bought a Zoo is very cleverly structured, in a way that you may have to watch it twice, and closely, to fully appreciate.
A properly low-budget, all-hands-on-deck exploitation movie with a satirical agenda. Blood Car makes the figure of speech "blood for oil" literal. Some fantastic gags and a brilliant pay off that shows where the filmmakers' sentiments really lie.
