Default Alex Ross Art Winner! With An Eye Patch!

Here are some of the entries to the Alex Ross Original Art competition we ran on Bleeding Cool, where the lucky winner would walk away with a Masks #1 with an original art piece from Alex Ross painted on the cover.

All they had to do was redesign a character from Masks for today. As you can see below, a number did just that.

But there can be only one winner, and while I was tempted so much to award it to the Lovecraftian Shadow below, in the end it just had to go to this Samuel Jackson-inspired version of Miss Fury from Bleeding Cool poster known as Eyemelt.

All of these are great...although a bunch of these characters are timeless. The 1930s look that the Shadow has would work today as would the 50s look that Green Hornet has.

I would've had a hard time not picking the "elder gods" Shadow, myself.

Miss Fury. I get it. Not bad, but I would have preferred a redesign of a character from Masks instead, as opposed to a gender-bender of a completely unrelated character. It's still cool, don't get me wrong, but it's just a novelty entry. No disrespect though, Eyemelt. I'd read a comic about that Miss Fury.

Maybe I should have entered my design for The Superior Spider?

Gotta say, the competition was tight, very lucky to get picked from a lot of top work! Thanks for kind words, Miss Fury is actually a character in Masks, and she's already a she! I don't think this version will make an appearance in comic form anytime soon, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Marvel put out a female Fury.

Are you kidding me? THAT won?
Lets look at why it fails.
A- Its a contest about redesigning a character and the winner just put boobs on Ultimate Nic Fury. HOW is that a redesign?
B- Even the genderbend was not a redesign. Just boobs.
C- The book is about CHARACTERS IN MASKS. And this one has NO MASK. A violation on what the element of the comic is based on.
D- Its not even related to the REAL Miss Fury. Its just a steal from Marvel comics.
E- And most of the entries are just taking what is already THERE and just adding crap to the design. With no attempt to make a redesign true to the CHARACTER. Only the one drawn by dlx-artist seemed to even understand the character. This is not redesign but mary sue crap.
F-With the exception of dlx-artist not one seemed to understand the aspect of what goes into design. No thought on silhouette, simple redraw-able design, or pleasing design.

And I won't even go into the fact that ONLY dlx-artist seemed to have good art. This is a sad thing that this was the winner and is proof that Bleeding cool is run by idiots. Glad I didn't waste my time with it.
