Great picks! I still need to read superman for all seasons! I'd add Superman Secret Origin by Johns/Frank to the list too

    Excellent list, Grace!

And by the way, my wife and I love SUPURBIA! A friend of hers told her about the book and gave her a copy of the new #1. To be honest I thought it sounded lame when she told me about it (superhero wives? etc.), but she insisted I give it a try. It was really good; way more entertaining and multi-layered than I expected.

Later today I'm headed to the comic shop to pick up my books, including Supurbia #2 and the TPB of the original mini. My wife has no idea; I'm gonna be a hero tonight, lol.

    Kudos!

"Back in 1992 when comic deaths actually meant something"

They did? Before 1992, Jean Grey's death was undone, Wonder Man dies and comes back, Elektra dies and comes back, Angel dies and is resurrected, Guardian dies and comes back, Iron Fist's death was retconned, Charles Xavier died twice and came back.

A superhero seemingly dying and returning later was fairly cliche at this time. No one believed for an instant that Superman was going to stay dead.

I'm so happy you and your wife are enjoying Supurbia! Thanks for giving it a try even though it didn't seem like something you'd like. Would be interested to know what you think of the new Issue #2 - tweet me after you and your wife read it! @GraceRandolph

I don't agree with the preconception that stories are about getting the character right. I think each different story conveys a unique aspect of the character.

Secret Origins, Birthright, Earth One are probably more relevant to Man of Steel.

Superman What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way.

Hands down the single greatest Superman story ever, it completely tears down the idea that we need edgy dark Superman.

I love Superman Birthright for being the best modern interpretation of the character. I love All-Star Superman for being the best timeless Superman story.
