Default Neil Gaiman Talks About The Gaiman Foundation

Earlier today I ran a piece based on a CBLDF press release about the Gaimain Foundation donating $60,000. Bleeding Cool commenters asked how this tied in with Gaiman's previous charitable body, Marvels & Miracles which was funded by Gaiman's work for Marvel and the court cases against Todd McFarlane and Image Comics.

    Turns out, it ties in rather well. Gaiman told Bleeding Cool;
Every penny of the Marvels and Miracles money I received from the McFarlane case went straight into the Gaiman Foundation, where I cannot touch it or retrieve it. It's all going to charitable causes (it has to, legally: that's what a Foundation is and does), and is being added to with money from me and from other projects as they come in.

One of the reasons it's there in the Foundation is it seemed saner and healthier to use it for years where it was needed on specific projects, to see results and to continue to donate annually, rather than to get it in and immediately give it all away in one lump. This year the GF has made about $115,000 in donations to a number of organisations: among other things, it's funding a lecture series at MIT, giving money to a health centre in the Washington DC area, supporting a project to help disadvantaged kids in Birmingham Alabama, and another that brings a storytelling project to New York area High Schools to allow kids to tell their own stories, Moth-Style. The CBLDF is the only one that's done a press release about it, which I was very happy with, as it encourages other people, I hope, to donate and to think about donating.

$60k...that could help people affected by Sandy, starving kids, disease research, etc
I'm glad Mr. Gaiman avoided those money pits and made sure the donation went to a fund that protects the rights of shop owners to sell hentai depicting adolescent looking characters.

Wow, gross generalization right there. Seems to be a theme on the boards today.

ANYWAY, overlooking that, let's also look at what the NF is also supporting. There's an additional $55k that has gone to funding a lecture series at MIT, giving money to a health centre in the Washington DC area, supporting a project to help disadvantaged kids in Birmingham Alabama, and another that brings a storytelling project to New York area High Schools to allow kids to tell their own stories.

It's nice to see one of the superstars of the industry giving back to the community and to art as a whole.

When someone has money to gift to a fund or cause they believe in, it doesn't stop you from putting your own money in causes you want to armchair support.

I'm glad to know that you're taking every cent you get that doesn't pay for your living expenses, and giving it to disaster relief, hunger abatement, and medical research. No comics, movies, restaurant meals, and so on for you. Bravo. Time to get serious and drop the internet service, so you can donate that money to these three approved causes too. Because as it stands, you're depriving the Red Cross, Oxfam, and AmFAR of your money.

Look, if you don't give a fuck about free speech, that's your choice. There are a variety of causes that really don't mean a whole lot to me, or I consider them not-that-important in the greater scheme of things. So I... don't give them money, or my verbal support. But if someone wants to donate $60,000 to the local ballet company, or to build a skatepark on the other side of town, or to a shelter for orphaned goats... good for them. I'm not going to bitch that the high-profile, popularly-supported, government-funded programs that matter more to me aren't getting that money. That would be (when you get down to it) selfish of me, demanding that other people spend their money on things I want it spent on instead of things that they think they can make a bigger or better difference on.

Fear of the banhammer prevents me from telling you what I think of statements like this in exact words.

Let me just tell you that you are a failure as a human being, you troll.

It's not others that get to decide which cause you see as worthy. Neil Gaiman cares about comics because he is who he is, doesn't mean he doesn't care about other causes, doesn't even mean he doesn't donate to other causes as well. This site is about comics and movies, that's why this news is relevant here and probably not in many places elsewhere.

Don't even pretend to get the right to judge somebody a myriad times more worthy than you based on so thin a foundation.

Really, I wish I could stick it to you in words that fit your ignorant self-righteousness.

I don't know what happened to the whole internet today but I have kept stumbling upon people voicing horrible opinions and being smug about it. After the "World Kindness Day", was it "I'm being a dick Day" and nobody told me?

Now that you mention it that might explain a thing or two.

How do you know he hasn't donated money to other causes? What business of yours is it that he donates at all? What charitible foundation have you set up lately?
