56% of americans are not "Red Skull". They have their reasons - and frankly for many of them it comes down to lack of education about what the bill means - but most of it is about weighing some vague financial doom that hovers over us all against the very real, present problem of having one of the least healthy populations in the developed world.

In time, I have every confidence that this country's population will come around, as they see what the bill means for them in their daily life, how important regular healthcare is and how effective it can be in preventing catastrophic illness. The National Health Service in the UK was passed with similarly low approval ratings, and it is now an unassailable right of life to british citizens, a matter of course.

I'm proud of it, and you should be too.

It really is one of those things that needs to be seen to be believed, I think, whoever you choose to blame (and yes, I would blame the absurd propaganda and rhetoric).

The spectre of communism is invoked at every turn, but when you ask people how they might feel about losing police, and schools, and firefighters, and roads...suddenly state run safety nets don't seem so bad. Yet, at one point, all of those institutions were privatized; fighters from a fire company from which you did not have coverage would watch your home burn, waiting only to make sure it didn't spead to houses they DID cover.

Now, such a system is unthinkable. In time, nation-wide healthcare will be the same.
