Default Avatar Plug of the Week: Dicks #1 Color

The history of comics is rampant with legendary creative teams, but few team-ups have produced such off-color hijinks as the combined might of Garth Ennis and John McCrea. Their early mainstream success at DC Comics with The Demon and Hitman gave way to a collaboration known 'round the world as Dicks. To quote Ennis himself: Dougie and Ivor, the heroes of Dicks, ?remain my all-time favorites of the characters I?ve written or created. My pride and joy, the ongoing saga of two idiots from Belfast, (as created) by two idiots from Belfast.?

Dicks has come roaring back ? in full color for the first time ever! The new monthly series colorizes all the previous Dicks adventures and leads right into a whole new adventure. That's right - once the original adventures of Dougie and Ivor have been remastered and released in color, Ennis and McCrea will launch into a brand-new storyline, never-before-seen. It's a long-awaited treat for fans of Ennis' outrageous and vulgar sense of humor. This Wednesday's launch of the new series marks the perfect jumping-on point for Ennis fans craving his lost work, and a nostalgic look back - oftentimes in gooey, oh-so-delightfully-nasty color -- for Dicks fans galore.

In Dicks, Dougie and Ivor, the shameless bollocks that claim to be private investigators, are back in action with more outrageous antics that will leave no shame uncovered. This series is made for the smart ass comics reader that can?t get enough low-brow humor as only Ennis and McCrea can deliver! Check out the below preview and get ready for the insanity.

Fortunately, I have not ordered this book. It is not so funny. I really prefer the late Northernlightz and Wasted than this. And this one cost a huge lot for what it is inside!!!!
    Aut Pax. Aut Bellum.

Support the comic book indy scene.

Question about the mainstreamed comic books: why I am still buying the singles when the trades are well inexpensive? Why?
I am doing the DC and Vertigo singles... and the new titles of 2011/12 are already listed on Amazon at real lower prices in trade format!!!
    Am I stupid?

I love Ennis, but it's really no better than what you'd find in a copy of Viz.

It's time for Ennis to let go of Dicks.

I enjoyed Dicks for what it was, because sometimes a bit of lowbrow crudity is just what the doctor ordered, but I feel no need whatsoever for a coloured version of it (particularly given that it was created to be black & white, and especially if it's Avatar doing the colouring job - I don't want to be rude but I find the combination of their paper stock and "standard" colouring to look a bit bland).

I wouldn't mind a couple of new Dougie & Ivor stories, but the world needs an ongoing Dicks series even less than it needed an ongoing Strange Killings series. Certainly not at that kind of ludicrous cover price.
Fancy something a bit different? Try the infrequently-updated Euro comics thread or the Small Press Reviews thread.

My initial reaction was similar to Fysh's above, but once I took a look at the art, I have to say that I like this quite a lot, and... well... I've missed Dicks. I'll probably get these Dicks, and once the new Dicks come out, I'll be ready and eager for more. There's nothing wrong with Ennis and McCrea giving us more Dicks.

There. I've said it and I'm not ashamed.

Dicks was rubbish when it was called For a Few Troubles More and it was worse when he re-wrote the same story and called it Dicks.

    Easily Ennis's worst work.
