Default Monday Runaround: Year Of The Spider

AnnualWatch: Garfield Spider-Man on the cover of the Comic-Con annual, available tomorrow.

ManWatch: Stan Lee will be joining the cast of Star Trek Next Gen at Calgary Comic Expo in April...

    WackerWatch: On the CBR forums.
Then you guys are definitely not the audience. You're the kind of fans it's no use trying to please. Better to ignore people who are just going to be pre-upset.

On the other hand you'll all read it anyway, so win-win. I suspect Marvel will be okay.

VarsityWatch: Michigan State University has hosted another Comics Forum.
Diana Busby jump-started her career creating comic books with the knowledge and experience she gained in a course she took during the summer.

The studio art and media arts and technology senior said although she developed an interest in comics at a young age, she would not have been able to turn her passion into something more without the help of Ryan Claytor, a professor in the Department of Art & Art History.

?I saw (Claytor?s) comics course and said, ?That?s for me,? and signed up for it,? Busby said. ?I don?t know if I would have started making comics if I hadn?t taken (Claytor?s) class.?

StripWatch: A Golden Pencil? Really? Nice...
The political cartoon Dry Bones and itscreator, Yaakov Kirschen, will receive the Israeli Museum of Caricature and Comics? ?Golden Pencil? award next week. The prize is awarded annually as a lifetime achievement award and a prize designed to encourage creative young artists and students.

This is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.

They say I am a work in progress. The fools.

    Catron Returns To Fantagraphics
Catron's hire is intriguing on several levels. One is historical. Catron was there at the company's start and well into its establishment and initial publishing years, leaving in 1985.

The Danger Of Saying "Lighten Up! It's Only..." | Fast Company
As I've written about before, DC Comics' Paul Levitz has written about the difference between "sincere" and "insincere" mistakes. For Levitz, there is a clear distinction between little errors in continuity that are perhaps inevitable in a story that has evolved over decades and a blatant disregard for history and continuity that comes from someone not perceived to have respect for all the time and energy fans have invested in following and learning about a story world.

The best part on checking out that CBR link was seeing "BANNED" under Blade X's name. Oh the joy such a thing would bring here.

The worst part is not knowing why I hate checking the forums in the morning and seeing a prolific poster banned. It's basically telling me "Things got really outta hand and you missed it. All of it. And you'll NEVER know why".

Not that I'm looking to open the discussion again. I'm sure the mods had good reason, though they sometimes seem to give other posters a far wider latitude.

Well, luckily we have an infraction system here, but for me tone and an ability to learn from previous transgressions tends to help stop one from getting banned.

Yeah, that's something I think is missing from CBR. Boards.ie uses an infraction system as well, and I think it works very well, especially on something as large as Boards.

Then again, I could never be as good a mod as you, Moonster. You are brilliant and superb and a fair and just ruler. We are lucky to have you!

(There, that should save me from a few infractions for the forseeable future, now to go mad!!)

Man, for as much as I love Spider-Man's current run, I can't blame anyone for not reading it because of Wacker's attitude towards comic fans. Clearly Marvel needs to take him off of internet message boards if that is the kind of behavior he shows.

And I just looked at the last twenty or so posts of Blade X on CBR. This is the quote, about Wacker, that seems to have gotten him banned, once again proving CBR will knock anyone off the boards at a Marvel/DC creator's request:

I suspect (and I could be wrong) that the reason he responds to negative posts is because he (a) gets some enjoyment out of arguing/debating with and/or taunting online fans and (b) he wants to prevent these negatives comments from possibly influencing sales in a negative manner.

I have never seen Blade do anything on this board ban-worthy. He has a tendency to make the same points about modern Marvel over and over and over again, but he generally keeps them (semi-)on topic and doesn't outright insult anyone, so I think a ban would be silly.

I hope this will be a board that never just starts banning because everyone dislikes someone.

I'm still not a fan of the new costume, but WOW does Andrew Garfield look more like the way I've always envisioned Peter Parker than "Mopey" Maguire ever did!

He really is straight out of a John Romita Sr comic, isn't he?
