CEREBUSTV RIP-OFF? - #13 Season 3 Jan 27-Feb 3
All this week, on demand or streaming video at Cerebus TV Internet Streaming Comic Book Show!
What a Rip!
RIP KIRBY, the first "modern" sophisticated private detective character in popular culture, was launched to immediate acclaim in 1946 and has influenced countless artists in the comics medium since.
It propelled famed photo-realist comics pioneer ALEX RAYMOND to his greatest wealth and fame - even after such achievements as creating FLASH GORDON, JUNGLE JIM and SECRET AGENT X-9 (with The Maltese Falcon's DASHIELL HAMMETT).
DAVE SIM's GLAMOURPUSS comic has been chronicling both the history of comics photorealism through practitioners like RAYMOND -- and Sim's own advanced development of the style through his serial imagined photo-realistic art documentary on the penultimate melodramatic episodes of Raymond's all-too-short life.
Dave takes a look at what he calls absolutely outstanding reproduction in IDW's volume 4 of RIP KIRBY:THE FIRST MODERN DETECTIVE. High praise indeed from the hard-to-please Sim - Raymond's Kirby is a notoriously difficult to reproduce comic strip.

WHO IS THIS BIZARRE GUY, GEOFF DARROW?
The non-plussed JOHN SCRUDDER keeps the camera rolling throughout, so that you can tune in and make up your own mind about what Scrudder called "A Bizarre Conversation with Geoff Darrow." Naturally, DAVE SIM finds it not at all weird, and is inspired to keep interjecting throughout. Darrow is the famed artist of HARDBOILED, BIG GUY AND RUSTY THE ROBOT and SHAOLIN COWBOY. Method to their madness? Maybe these guys are onto something!
