Default The Phoenix - The Saviour Of British Comic Books

So I'm getting my six year old daughter a subscription to a new comic book she's been reading. Not by Marvel, DC, Archie, not from the staples of DC Thomson, Titan, Panini or IPC in the UK, and no, not 2000AD.

But every week she's been reading The Phoenix. A heady mixture of original comic strips, comedy, action adventure, and in disprate styles, with activities and games to boot. And it's wornderful. On sale in the UK through subscription, Waitrose and comic stores, it's a wonderful sequel to the DFC, from the same team, but with new financial backing. There's a preview above and a subscription right here.

She can't wait for her first issue to come through the door.

"For overseas subscriptions please call : 01604 251 490. Telephone opening hours GMT 0800-2130 Monday - Friday 0800-1600 Saturday."

Telephone? What is this? The twentieth century?

I'd assumed the DFC didn't last because of the subs-only model, and that the Phoenix would be in shops. It looks good, and I hope it succeeds, but surely a newsstand presence would be advisable?

I think my daughter would love something like this. It's unfortunate it really isn't available in the US.

I would love to be able to get this in the US, but good luck with that...even if Diamond picked it up, we wouldn't be getting any consistency in issues--hell, they can't even deliver every issue of 2000 AD to stores these days (wish they would go back to monthly packages--at least they would have a better chance of getting to stores).

Perhaps The Phoenix could be bound in collections much the same way as Spirou is (and perhaps we can eventually see The DFC collected that way...)--I would definitely support something like that.

This is the sort of book that you'd think could do well digitally. Sell it on Comixology and the frequency issue abroad wouldn't bean issue, plus you wouldn't have to increase price due to shipping.
