Default Ferals #1 by David Lapham and Gabriel Andrade - Avatar Plug Of The Week

Today marks the in-store debut of the highly-anticipated modern werewolf epic FERALS, written by David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Deadpool Max) and illustrated by Gabriel Andrade (Lady Death). Lapham has been carving out a bloody niche for himself at Avatar Press with his work on three Crossed spin-off projects (Family Values, 3D, and Psychopath) and the Caligula miniseries, and the ongoing FERALS series promises to deliver a healthy dose of crime noir drama to go along with its big helpings of gore and sex appeal.

Lapham provided his insight into the series in a Bleeding Cool exclusive interview previously, as did Andrade . Their interviews hinted at a deep, rich mythology, the likes of which we?ve seen in other successful horror titles like The Walking Dead and 30 Days of Night. What begins as a mystery in a small town ? as a police officer of questionable morals investigates a murder/mutilation ? reveals an ancient, hidden culture of werewolves as far-reaching as it is hungry.

To get yourself pumped for your visit to the comic shops today, check out this FERALS #1 preview:

Looks good. I am gonna pick it up today if my shop has it. I've enjoyed Lapham's work since his early stuff with Valiant Comics.

David Lapham is a great writer, but werewolves though? What's the point?

Pretty excited for this, a great writer with a solid artist, cant wait for this ever since I read the interviews, it seems like they will build something that will last with a great plot and art.

I pre-ordered issue #1 for the folder. Ultimately, this is going to have to deliver the goods story-wise if you expect me to hang around for issue 2. Comparing the mythology of Ferals to the Walking Dead is a tall order. Hype, much? Let's just hope there's enough meat strewn in between the gore and sex for there to be some semblance of story, eh? I'm going in with an open mind, but Lapham's record for delivering great stories in recent years has been hit-and-miss at best. We're a long way from The Innocence of Nihilism.

I read the first issue and it wasn't bad, however I noticed a couple of continuity errors.

At the beginning Jackie comments about it being 2am in the morning but it's pretty damn sunny out. I could by this if they're in Northern Alaska, but they're in Minnesota during winter at 2am, so it's going to be fairly dark. Also at the end when Jackie is being attacked she is grabbed, dragged, and attacked all outside. Yet when Dale comes downstairs he finds one of Jackie's ripped off legs inside the house. So outside a couple of errors like that the first issue wasn't bad, I'll give issue #2 a shot.
