Default Movie Version Of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns In The Works

It's going to get rather crowded out there, with alternative Batmen cropping up left, right and centre. We'll barely be over Christian Bale* when a reboot will see another lucky young man dropped into the role, and there are plans for another, different Bats to appear in a Justice League feature. Add to this the various animated Batmen, from Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader and Bruce Greenwood.

Too much Batman? Or never enough?

Well, I think there's always going to be room for The Dark Knight Returns, don't you?

Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

Fittingly, Year One will come along first, but DKR is already in the early stages of development. According to our sources, several veterans of Batman toons past will be on the crew list, though we're still trying to confirm who is writing and directing the film.

It would be sheer guesswork to try and determine when this might make it to the screen, but it isn't going to be anytime soon. Here's hoping they do it right.

Which doesn't necessarily mean with a dry, determined insistence on copying Miller's pages...

Is it too late to suggest Adam West in the role?

*Some people have been over him for years, to be fair.

Done right, this would be awesome, done wrong............................................. ........

Personally, I would love to see it as a live action movie (or two)

That's a bit of a cheeky, misleading headline, isn't it?

I'm sad that McDuffie isn't here to be involved. He was wonderful in helping to bring comics to the Silver Screen

You've forgotten the "Animated" at the start of the headline for this story. I thought I'd mention it because such an oversight couldn't possibly have been deliberate.

That being said, we've already had an animated version of DKR:

Since this is animated it matters little.

While we're on the topic of Keaton. I would be thrilled to hear his voice as the DKR Batman.

Man, I was picturing someone like Viggo Mortensen or Hugh Laurie (we can't go too old) in this until I saw it was animated.

It was bound to happen when Batman fell into the Public Domain like this.

Oh, wait. I've jumped the gun on that, haven't I? That's not until 2111. My bad.

I would love to see Warners have the balls to put this animated feature into theaters. Though i doubt it could happen. Hell, I doubt they'll even extend the movie to a full two hour direct to video feature. I'll probably be seventy odd minutes like All Star Superman and the others were.

Meanwhile, I don't mind it being animated. To me, having Miller's style animated is just as good if not better than live action. Unless you stylize it ala Sin City, you loose the book's style. Even Sin City's film, as amazingly cartoony as they made the characters, wasn't as exact as animation. So really, I much prefer an animated feature.

Plus, if it's animated, maybe fans can finally get fan's dream casting for the book. Clint Eastwood as old Bruce. And if that's waaaaaaay out of the price range, you can always get Timothy Olyphant to stand in. Hell, it worked for Rango.
