    Thumbs up 'Like' leaderboard

Just curious but is there a way to see something like a 'like' leaderboard, having the rankings of 'likes' a member has received? I don't know if that's possible or not but I thought it would be fun to check out.

    I don't think it's a good idea. It's way too close to a karma/whatevertherightwordis system.
Such things are incredibly divisive and are not helpful in a community.

"how can I be thought of as a troll? I'm the most liked person here"
We already have an undercurrent of 'political liking', which I'm not opposed to. I'd just hate it to actually have any power.

The trolls would get a kind of power that they shouldn't have.
Stop telling me how things should be, I'm just some cunt on the internet.

As the most liked person here, I'm offended and should have the power to ban you.

I'm pretty surprised at how popular the LIKES are, since the thread ratings have never been much used. People are pretty acclimated to the LIKE concept at this point, I suppose.

The reputation system we used for about a month in the early days did lead to nowhere good, so that's worth considering.

That said, I am thinking about ways to extend LIKES, as it does seem to encourage participation. Any thoughts?

Well, I *do* think that they encourage participation, even on a base level ... they encourage people to join in with our community that we have here.
Perhaps something to encourage more likes on the initial postings, rather than other individuals.

Basically, turning the earlier suggestion slightly on its head.
Have a 'like' ranking, but only on the initial thread creation posts. And possibly still, only on the official threads created by Rich and the crew.
This way we don't drop in to the horribly disgusting mess that is reputation (that was the word I was after earlier) systems, and you get yet more stats for your 'trending' posts.

It would certainly be interesting to see what people actually 'like' as opposed to what people actually read.
I think that it might inform editorial style, too.

Of course it could end up getting political, with (for example) all the trolls 'hatin'' (ie. not 'liking') the posts by literally any female that dares to write here, but it might be worth a go.

Then, of course, there is the fact that every post that I make should get an 'auto-like' from every single member of the forum. And then they have to *choose* to opt out of the like.
Very much like facebook privacy setttings.

Obviously that's the best idea I've ever had.

The humor of me liking the post aside, I do think some kind of tracking re: liking news posts is a great idea. I usually hold back on liking the initial story because I don't want to flood Rich's inbox with likes. But if there was a useful reason for it, fuck him!

Also, for blatant evidence against a leaderboard, see the (ridiculous!) like count on this thread (900!) ...
How Liberalism May Be Hurting Comic Book Sales by Darin Wagner
Then actually take a look and tell me the majority of that isn't political ... :-)

Because you give power to people who are frankly just trolling... which then puts them in the "well if so many people agree <like> what I'm saying, then how can you discipline/ban/chastise me for it" ... they then get up on the whole punk/rebellion thing.
... and it works both ways, here ... it's not a leftist/communist view or whatever, because there are just as many peopleleft or right thinking that use the system in that way, too.

Quite simply: If you don't have the system in place, it's not available to be abused. The only positive thingit does is let you see how popular you are ... which then brings the biggest downside as its cousin, creating a social elite.
Now, I don't know about you ... but as a life-long geek, I'm frankly done with that kind of shit.

Separately: Reputation systems have even been used to effectivelly ban users with negative 'karma' before ... it's fucking ridiculous.

Reputation systems have never worked on any forum I've ever been on. I don't see how suddenly it would start working here.

NB: If you feel the need to respond to this further, please do not pull the post apart like a troll woul, please respond to it as a whole. It's not that I expect you to, but, y'know, just guarding myself.
