How about a simple back-end check that prevents anyone with say less than 20 posts from posting a new topic? I doubt the human spammers would spend that much time building up a post count.

I'm not sure, but utilising tech like (that used in) Lorem Ipsum, I've noted that spambots alone are capable of generating vaguely relevant posts. Not that these'd fool dear Mark, here, no. However they might slip by on dead threads, to build ... oh whatamIonabout ... you're right, it's a good idea!
