So… that happened.

And there was that other thing….

I commented yesterday on how it seemed that the CW / DC shows as a whole were speeding up, making more things happen per episode and resolving issues faster. They're feeling like Silver Age comics instead of today's decompressed books. That trend continued tonight with What We Leave Behind, the 9th episode of the season.

I spent the whole episode expecting to see Prometheus unmasked and be shocked by who it was. Little did I realize that would be exactly what would happen yet also not what I expected. From the moment the mask came off to the closing credits, my mouth was agape.

But we start at the Mayor's holiday party where there is a lot of awkwardness. Thea reacting to Oliver having Susan Williams as his date. Felicity awkwardly introducing Billy Malone to her friends. Curtis awkwardly trying to keep the late night lies going for his husband Paul. The horrible lying cause Paul and Curtis to leave early, walking into a trap. Prometheus attacks Curtis and injects him with a drug that Oliver would recognize from his days at The Hood.

We get a series of flashbacks to one of the first cases Oliver worked after bringing Diggle in. A drug manufacturer who produced the cure for a strain of tuberculous. When an epidemic breaks out, the man bumps the price from $10 a pill to $1000. The man, Justin Claybourne, is also on the Hood's list. Oliver visits him in the old green suit, giving him a chance to fix things, but he doesn't and they find out that Claybourne created the strain of tuberculous and started the epidemic. The Hood killed Claybourne.

Knowing this, they go after Prometheus in the old pharmaceutical warehouse and it's revealed that Evelyn is the one that betrayed them and she's working with Prometheus. They find some ashes on the site that belonged to Claybourne, so that trail is cold. With Curtis being attacked, Billy decides he need to bring in Prometheus to protect Felicity. He goes to where they fought Prometheus and discovers a lock box with a photo in it. He texts the photo to Felicity just before being taken by Prometheus.

The photo is of a young boy that is likely Claybourne's and who would be 30 now. Oh, and somehow Prometheus is tied to a woman Oliver knew in Russia…

We get another flashback of Oliver getting an address from Felicity back when she was just a girl in the I.T. department. This clues Oliver in to where Prometheus might be and of course he goes alone… like Oliver does. He confronts Prometheus in the spot where he killed Claybourne. They fight, Prometheus uses a throwing star to split one of Oliver's arrow in twain… the leap off a building together and end up on another floor where Green Arrow gets the drop on Prometheus just as he was promising to make Oliver's life a living hell… and Oliver puts two arrows in his chest.

And this is where everything really starts to happen.

It wasn't Prometheus, but rather Billy Malone dressed in Prometheus' suit, with tape over his mouth, a bow taped to his hand and a speaker on his chest. Billy is dead. Oliver has to go back to the Arrowcave and tell everyone what happened. He is beside himself with grief. Felicity is crushed. Everyone is stunned and Oliver tells them that Prometheus is right, they should get far away from Oliver. Felicity tells Oliver that its not on him, it's on Prometheus. The team pulls in to support him.

From there, Curtis goes home to find that Paul is packed and leaving. Felicity is in her place crying. Diggle gets a fake phone call from Lyla that leads him into a waiting team of police. And Oliver goes to Susan's and it looks like they hook up.

But wait… there's more.

After his time at Susan's, Oliver heads back to the Arrow cave only to find someone waiting for him… Laurel Lance.

So… Oliver killed a cop that was also Felicity's boyfriend, Diggle is back in custody, Evelyn is a traitor, Prometheus is one step ahead of everyone and Laurel is back. Which is interesting how she would've gotten in since they changed all the security protocols that day. That was a whole lot of things to happen in just the last few minutes.

Arrow will return January 25th on the CW.
