Report: Andrew Garfield Heartbroken Over How Bad Amazing Spider-Man Films Were

spidey-cry

Yesterday's Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield, who starred in Amazing Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 2 before the franchise was mercifully rebooted with Tom Holland, joined actress Amy Adams, who plays Lois Lane in the DC Cinematic Universe, for Variety's "Actors On Actors" interview. Speaking about his experience with the films, Garfield said he learned that characterization and storytelling aren't always at the "top of the priority list" when it comes to corporate superhero franchises:

I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story, and to serve this incredible character that I've been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks your heart. I got heartbroken a little bit to a certain degree.

If only someone could have warned him of this ahead of time…

Hearing Garfield vent opened the floodgates for Adams, who had some complaints of her own about portraying a comic book character onscreen:

That's the tricky thing with Lois, that I find is, I love playing her, I love everyone I work with, but sometimes it's tricky because I feel she's in service of the story instead of the story serving the character.

In addition to the movie business, she also just described the last fifteen years of superhero comic crossover events and all comics written by Brian Bendis.

Well, at least we know we're not suffering alone, people.

A prophecy once said that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero would come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events. Sadly, that prophecy was wrong. Oh, Jude Terror was right. For ten years. About everything. But nobody listened. And so, Jude Terror has moved on to a more important mission: turning Bleeding Cool into a pro wrestling dirt sheet!
