Ms Marvel #13 – The Ultimate Liberal Fantasy In A World That Elected Trump

The new issue of Ms Marvel #13 caused some controversy when it was promoted earlier this month. Murdoch-owned Lousie Mensch-run "fight-wing" site Heat St reported

Scandal: Marvel's New Ms. Marvel Uses Her Superpowers to Get Hillary Clinton Elected

Saying,

Ms. Marvel #13 sees Kamala trying to get out the vote in her New Jersey hometown, only to have door after door slammed in her face, and to be chewed out by a character who looks suspiciously like Bernie Sanders and hasn't voted since 1972. At one point, the collective apathy of New Jersey voters saps Kamala of her powers and forces her to pass out in the middle of the street, emotionally bereft at the thought of Donald Trump winning the election.

And later,

Unfortunately for Hillary, the comic book actually comes out after the election: on November 30. Which means that, by the time she can buy the issue in her local comic book store, we'll know whether the Hillary-focused efforts in New Jersey won or lost her the race.

Well, the comic actually is out. Which lets us report just how wrong Heat St was.

Firstly, it's not the Presidential election. It's a local mayoral election. Ms Marvel is not fighting for Hillary Clinton, or against Donald Trump. But there are stand-ins.

But no one likes the political establishment continuity incumbent mayor, John Woodby, either.

So that's what she does, as we saw in the preview. She gets out the vote. Door to door, street to street, she may not be old enough to vote yet but she gets everyone she can to do so.

And against the odds, she does so. So, is this the liberal fantasy where Hillary Clinton wins against the big, bad Trump?

No.image-32

It's the one in which Jill Stein won. Somehow.

So whatever the results of the Presidential election might have been, Ms Marvel was daring to dream the impossible right from the get go.

Hey, that's what superhero comics are for. Wish-fulfilment fantasies…
