Nicolas Cage Was Asked To Be Mr. Wednesday In American Gods

American Gods is shaping up to look quite excellent. The footage that has been released thus far has me quite impressed.

It turns out one of the shows' key characters could have been quite different though. Speaking to the LA Times, Nicolas Cage was approached about the role of Mr. Wednesday. When asked why he hasn't made the jump to TV like a lot of Hollywood's finest, he said:

You know, it's a good point and I've been invited many times to go on a show, one of which was on Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" to play Mr. Wednesday, which was a great part, beautifully written. And I said no. And William Friedkin, we've been talking about doing different things.

He went on to explain, that while he likely will do TV one day, he is just a bit stubborn about taking on the medium.

It probably would be good for me globally as a career move to do television, and never say never — I probably will one day. But the idea of being stuck in one city for months on end playing a part — while that might be interesting, I could see where I might start to feel trapped.

I'm just still a little bit of a snob. I mean, I'm holding on. Again, I'm never going to say never but I'm, like, kicking and screaming that I just want to stay in movies.

I can't really argue about Ian McShane being cast in the role, and I have little doubt he will kill it. Still though, seeing Cage in the role would have given things a really different vibe, something a little more unhinged perhaps. Still, I think the show is in a great place with McShane.
