Getting To Know Evie Dunn

Being relatively new to the world of comics journalism and Bleeding Cool I've never had a request from someone to be interviewed. I've hit up individuals in the industry to interview them but never the other way around. Until recently when a representative of Megacon Tampa Bay (which I will be attending) asked if I would like to interview pint size (9-year-old) comic book creator Evie Dunn who will be there at the convention with her father, IDW Publishing's Martin Dunn, repping her own comic she put together with the help of other professional comic creators. How could I say no to that? Most of us who are in this business or attempting to get into it grew up reading comics. Where would some of us be without comics? For comics to keep growing we need kids to continue getting interested in them and reading them for years to come.

Now as to why you clicked on this article? Well, when I agreed to interview Evie at the convention they immediately asked me if I would like to do a pre-convention interview and I figured why not. It would allow me to let fellow comic book fans know about her and her comic before they go to Megacon and I could split up my questions between the two interviews as I have a feeling she's gonna be spending a lot of time with the press over the weekend of the convention.

Now onto the show. Hope you enjoy.

Marco: Thanks for letting me do this pre-Megacon interview with you, Evie. I read the first two issues of your comic and thought it was pretty fantastic and a lot of fun. And that's not me just being nice. You have quite the imagination. Which brings me to my first question. Is any of your story influenced by anything that happened to you personally? Or maybe dreams you had? Or adventures you went on with friends and or family?

Evie: You're very welcome, and thank you for having me here. Well, you probably know my Dad is Martin Dunn. He makes lots of comics, and so it sort of starts with him. I wrote the story after my dog, Rosco, passed away. He had a twisted stomach and couldn't eat or drink anything. When my parents took him to the vet, they said it wasn't able to be fixed. So the vet had to put him to sleep. It was really sad, but even worse because it was my sister Brooklyn's birthday. When my Dad told me that he went to Heaven, I was thinking about the Greek Gods. I had been learning about them in school, and I told my Dad I wanted to go to Olympus to get him back. He explained that I couldn't, but he told me to write it down as it was a good story. It helped me feel better.

Marco: Do you remember the first comic you ever read and what made you want to check it out?

Evie: YES! It was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1. I am a big fan of TMNT and want to write TMNT comics. I wanted to shave it in my head, but my Mom said "no way." I was really little, but I know that was it.

Marco: What made you want to make comics? Is this something you wanna do when you grow up?

Evie: I asked my Dad and Dee Fish to help me make Fetch. When they said yes, I realized I really like to make comics. Before all of this, I just wanted to write and direct scary movies. I'm a big fan of horror films. My favorites are The Amityville Horror, Child's Play, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space! Daddy didn't know I'd been sneaking to watch the movies, and I always took them from his collection then put them back before he noticed. Now I love making comics! Daddy and some other really cool people helped too like Dee, Gab Contreras, and Dustin Orazi. I had my own editors too like Aly Dunn, Brie Tart, Dustin Holifer, and just a bunch of cool people who helped out. We spent almost 2-years making it, and it was a lot of fun. I wanna make a new comic now called "Chaos Cat" but I'm waiting for just a little while first. Fetch is still so new to people.

Marco: And to follow up on that. What are your favorite comics that you're reading right now?

Evie: My absolute favorite comics right now are of course Ninja Turtles. I read the TMNT book that comes out from IDW. It's my favorite! I read that book every month. I just finished issue #63! I also just finished TMNT Universe #2. Daddy has them in his pull box for me at Yancy Street Comics. I did my news interview there and Steve let me say I'm the Princess of Yancy Street.

Marco: Now I'm gonna leave more of the questions about the story for when I interview you at Megacon. This interview is so people can get to know you and read up a little on what the comic is about. We're gonna have a summary and pictures for them when this goes live on Bleeding Cool. So for my last question. Are looking forward to Megacon and is there anyone you're looking forward to meeting? Or things you wanna see? Maybe meet other kids like you who love comics too?

Evie: Absolutely! I'm so excited I can't sit still. I can't wait to meet Tony Bedard in person. I love Green Lantern. My Dad knows him and says he will meet me, and Tony actually took a picture with my book for me this year. I'd like to meet other comic creators too. Like, Rob Liefeld because he made Deadpool and I think Deadpool is funny. Oh, and Wallace Shawn is there and it would be fun to meet him cause he was in Toy Story! I love that movie! As for meeting other kids, yes, cause I want to inspire other kids to start reading more comics!

And that's that. Thanks to everyone out there who checked out this article and if you're gonna be at Megacon make sure to find Evie in the Pro Guests section at table P08 .

Evie will be doing a book launch party and signing at Yancy Street Comics in New Port Richey, Fl in November. Stay tuned to the Fetch facebook page, or www.yancystcomics.net/ for dates and times.

Fetch #1 and #2 will be available in limited quantities at Megacon Tampa Bay. First come, first serve. Issue #1 is currently available on ComiXology.com. Issue #2 is set to release on ComiXology soon.
