Benedict Cumberbatch Was The Only Actor Seriously Considered For Doctor Strange

I seem to remember feeling around the time Doctor Strange was announced was all the buzz was entirely around Benedict Cumberbatch getting cast in the main role. There was a time where it was reported the actor couldn't do it because a production of Hamlet would clash with the filming, but eventually, that was worked out.

It seems that Cumberbatch was always the choice too. Speaking to Empire, director Scott Derrickson said that Cumberbatch was 'the only actor we seriously considered'. However, it took some doing. It seems the whole production of the film moved for Cumberbatch. It's a fact Cumberbatch seems really grateful of.

I really did think I had to kiss it goodbye.

If you can't jump on board when the ride's going past. that's usually it, so the hugest compliment they paid me was to come back to me. It motivated me to try to fulfil their faith in me.

I think there are a bunch of actors who could have done a great job here, with both rumoured other choices Joaquin Pheonix and Patrick Dempsey seeming feasible, but Marvel obviously deemed Cumberbatch as integral. I'm sure that will pay off.
