A Little Late To The Game, But I'm Here: Thoughts On Stardew Valley

Last weekend, the Steam Summer sale was coming to an end and I was nudged towards the trailer for a game called Stardew Valley. Because I live under a rock most days, I completely missed out on the hype that surrounded this game for the past year. After figuring out a way to make it run on my Mac, I double-clicked and dedicated my life to it for the next three hours. I wasn't forced to or anything, it's just that much fun!

If you're like me and don't know what the game is all about, here's a trailer:

Cute right? Well, it's so much more than cute. Right from the very beginning I was hooked into the storyline. I wish my Grandfather would leave me a farm in real life. Granted, something tells me that there wouldn't be a wizard waiting for me in the forest to make things a bit more interesting. This game is full of surprises, and I know I haven't even begun to discover all that it has to offer.

Stardew Valley is great for beginners, but it's even better for experienced gamers. I was so relieved when the game started and I wasn't overwhelmed with prompts and instructions. You're eased into the world in a way that you can control and discover at your own pace. What's also great about it is the variety of activities the game has to offer for your character. If you'd like to advance in one area such as farming, you can. Granted, as I continue to play I realize more and more that it's better to have a balance and do a little bit of everything.

Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 10.58.33 PMIt's the small details and surprises that make me feel like this is one of the best games I've ever played. It is certainly a time sink, but a relaxing one. Just don't let your crops die! I made the mistake of planting thirty packets of special Spring seeds right before Summer began, and they all died. With that said, that's also a really awesome part of the game. You have to plan things out and be mindful of the seasons because they change just like in real life. My biggest struggle at the moment is making friends, which sounds really lonely and sad. Granted, I'm not directing too much attention towards friendship because I'm fully dedicated to my farm. Overall, I think Stardew Valley is one of the best games available right now and you cannot beat the price! Oh, and if all that isn't enough…the soundtrack is amazing.

Don't have a computer to play on? Well, don't worry. Last month, it was announced that the game will be coming to Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U. Head on over to their website to learn more.
