How Will Monument Point Change Felicity Smoak?

I'm going to talk about last night's Arrow episode – Monument Point. So beware of spoilers.

We're down to the last couple of episode of season four and things are starting to pick up speed as we approach the season finale and Damien Darhk's master plan of Genesis. The previous week we saw that Darhk went after Lyla Michaels to get access to Rubicon, a device that overrides the worlds nuclear launch code. Because someone thought that a device like that would be a good idea. The episode ended with Darhk getting Rubicon, John Diggle had his own brother's blood on his hands, Thea Queen got trapped in HIVE's ark and the team figured out what Genesis is. Darhk is going to destroy the world and save only a handful to repopulate.

This was a more Felicity Smoak related episode and we find out why in the end. She has to call in her father, the Calculator, to help stop Darhk and save the world. Now there is a lot that goes on in the episode like the return of Murmur, Brick and Anarky. Thea and Malcolm have words. Felicity gets fired from Palmer Tech. But all of that takes a back seat to what happens at the end. And it ties into Monument Point.

Monument Point was a city in the DC universe that got so damaged during a fight between the Justice Society and Scythe that the team decided to stay and help rebuild it. It's a large metropolis with one of the suburbs being Havencroft. In the episode last night, Felicity and Calculator were able to stop all but one of the nukes. The best she could do was to make the missile think Monument Point was somewhere else. She changed the GPS location as fast as she could as far away from the city, but it put it just outside of Havenrock (slight name change), destroying the suburb. Tens of thousands of people died (fueling Darhk's magic), but the number would be much higher had it hit Monument Point.

Felicity has always been a character of light and hope. How will she respond to what happened. Will she look at it as having saved a lot of lives or will she see it as she killed the people of Havenrock? How will this change the character going forward? Everything I've seen with the character tells me she is not going to take it well.

Now the team is down to just three with Laurel gone and Thea captured. Darhk is at an immense power level. That's going to make things very tricky going into the penultimate episode of the season, Lost in the Flood. Like all 22nd episodes of Arrow, the title is that of a Bruce Springsteen song.

Here is an inside look at the Monument Point episode from last night.
