The First Wicked + The Divine Collection Sold Six Figures

Today's Observer newspaper has run a 101 article for the recent rise of a number of comic books mostly from Image Comics arising from a certain scene.

It seems to have initially been entitled "Kapow! " but someone has managed to get that changed to "Framed!" for the online version.

Including the likes of Saga, The Wicked + The Divine and Bitch Planet, with questionnaire interviews with Kelly Sue DeConnick, Fiona Staples, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie.

There's a lot which readers may be familiar, but Gillen does mention one number,

We want to do work that's less obviously in its ghetto. We want our books to be more accessible, more emotionally and intellectually sophisticated. The book publishing industry would kill for our sales figures. We did 100,000 copies of the first collected volume of The Wicked + The Divine, and that's a lot. So it's cult, but it's big.

That's a nice statdrop that should raise some people's eyebrows – that's a million dollars at retail for just the first trade paperback.
