Beer: Geyser Gose

Brewery: Two Roads Brewing Company/Evil Twin Brewing

ABV: 5.5%

Notes: brewed with Icelandic moss, herbs, kelp and sea salt

Let's start the year off with a good, albeit somewhat oddball, beer.  Two Roads Brewing, out of Stratford, CT, has collaborated with Evil Twin to produce the Geyser Gose, a unique twist on a gose or salt beer.  During a joint trip to Iceland, the two breweries sourced local ingredients to put in their beer, namely moss, herbs, kelp, rye, an Icelandic yogurt called skyr and sea salt.  Considering the oddness of these ingredients, the final result was quite surprising.

Geyser Gose was a hazy golden yellow in color.  It poured a one-inch head and left behind a lasting ring of lacing.  It gave off the distinctive scents of lemon and sea salt, as well as some light earthiness and notes of brine.

The most notable flavors of the beer were that of lemon zest.  It was also tart, but not offputtingly so.  I detected traces of salt, but nothing as to make the beer undrinkable.  In fact, I found this beer to incredibly refreshing and drinkable.  Couple those traits with a dry finish and some characters of earth, brine and bread, and you have yourself a unique but very well made and balanced brew.

Overall, I have to say this beer was a triumph of creativity.  All of the flavors fell into place and it was very pleasant to drink.  Normally, I would consider this outside of my comfort zone, but the Geyser Gose was on point for me.

What to Drink This To:

During a tasting, I had a chance to speak with Two Roads Representative John Kleinchester and ask him if the beer was named in reference to the crime legend Keyser Soze of the crime film, The Usual Suspects.  He informed me that it was not and that it was named after a literal geyser and features the likenesses of the Evil Twin and Two Roads head brewers.

Regardless, I am suggesting that you enjoy this beer with The Usual Suspects, a favorite film of mine.  In addition to fantastic direction and editing, The Usual Suspects really peaks in terms of performances from all the actors (though Kevin Spacey steals the show) and writing.  It features a wonderful plot twist by the end of the film, which left my mind blown and super impressed with Bryan Singer and Chris McQuarrie's ability to weave a story.

Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world.  He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
