The State Of Comics In France In 2015

Asterixcover1The ACBD have issued their full report, embedded below, by Gilles Ratier, secretary general of CALL. Calling the last year a "year of rationalisation", he noted challenges from everything from the Charlie Hebdo attacks to a slower pace of production and less risks being taken in favour of trying to appeal to a mainstream market, and keeping their place in bookstores.

He counts 5525 French comic book albums published in 2015, or which 3924 were entirely original, down 2.9% on 2014. He counts 368 publishers but the market is dominated by three main players and 12 smaller ones, taking 68.6%.

Sales however were up, and are continued to rise, even as the bestselling titles fell in sales.

He counted 2305 new titles published from other countries, with 1501 from Asia and a larger rise to 524 from the USA. 960 collected or reprinted editions, down 98, but an increase in titles that are no longer seeing new volumes.

There were also 71 journals and 13 special editions covering the medium, 25 magazines, 43 specialist website and 96 books published about comic books. Digital comics are hardly growing however, up 1%, with the print to digital transition struggling.

1399 creators were considered successfully making a living, with 3 new albums, an ongoing contract or regular employment  while 1602 creators failed to see an album published.

28 comics were turned into films, TV series or cartoons, while 179 works in other media were turned into comics.
