At This Time Of Year, Please Look Out For One Another

footprints-2It is believed that there are more suicides at Christmas than at any time of the year, though there is scant evidence to support this. But at a time of heightened emotion, family gatherings, and pressure to perform or be a certain way, for many it can be too much. It may just be that there is less of a news cycle, and such stories demonstrate a greater gap between the expected prescribed happiness and the reality for some. The news has already reported a number of murder suicides in just the past two days that jar from what we are supposed to be seeing at this time of the year.

Last night one comic book creator posted a goodbye on social media, telling one enquirer that no, he was not okay. His wife was alerted by friends, who reported back that she had found him and was now at the hospital. It brought it home, rather.

Comic book creation can be a very solitary affair, creators working for long periods of time on their own, incrementally working on something over days, weeks, months, in the knowledge that it will be experienced in seconds. And over Christmas, the people who you do talk with, editors, publishers and the like, go away for a week. And creative partners may have other familial responsibilities and concerns.

We all say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year at this time. But sometimes we actually have to make that happen for those we know.

Look after yourselves. And look after each other.
