DC Comics To Oppose 'Supermanny' Trademark For Kids' Cerebral Palsy Fundraiser

"Supermanny" is the nickname for a young boy, Manny Beuno, born 4 weeks premature, with very serious medical complaints including cerebral palsy, many of which were not covered by the parents health insurance.

His mother, Holly Bueno, has run a number of charity events, raising money not just for Manny's treatment but also for other children in the community wit similar issues. Which has turned into an annual race, The Supermanny Mission 5k in Romeoville, Illinois, to raise awareness for cerebral palsy and epilepsy in the community, and educate the community about multiple childhood disabilities. Each year, Supermanny will focus on a new "villain" and stage a handicap accessible 5k course and a SuperKids Miler course. 2015 saw 800 people running, many in costumes, which looked like this.

Today they are also holding a special Black Friday Sale on running in the next race on May 1st for those who want to sign up..

Charity fundraisers do have to watch out for those who might take advantage of goodwill, or who might use the name of the charity for other purposes.

As a result, Holly Bueno has tried to trademark the name "Supermanny" for charitable fundraising services; charitable fundraising services by means of running and walking events; charitable fundraising services by means of selling goods to raise funds.

However DC Comics are mounting a challenge to this and has requested time to file an opposition to the trademark application.

That doesn't mean they are stopping the fundraising under that name, they are just opposing the registration of its trademark because, presumably, for its similarity to "Superman".

To find out more about Supermanny, you can go to their website or Facebook or read some local press clippings… maybe you might be able to help.
