Blizzard Aren't Going To Talk About Subscriber Numbers Anymore

world of warcraft

It's pretty insane that World of Warcraft still commands several million subscribers. The game is well over ten years old now, and it exists in a time when MMOs subscriptions are thought to be impossible to keep.

In a report yesterday, Blizzard revealed that numbers had fallen 100k from the last quarter to 5.5 Million registered users. On top of that though, Blizzard said this will be the last time it will be reporting on its subscriber numbers in quarterly reports. The company said:

This is the last quarter that we plan to provide subscriber numbers.

There are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance.

If you are cynical, you could see this as protecting the numbers as they've been on a steady decline over the years. However, I do think this has more to do with the diversifying pay model which is partially free to play and with more and more in-game purchases being introduced.
