Not Your Average Christmas Story: Grant Morrison's Klaus #1 Has A Different Kind Of Heart

If you have any reservations about how epic Grant Morrison's new comic Klaus is going to be, I'm here to tell you to not doubt this masterful writer. You won't find any jingle bells in this Santa tale. From BOOM! Studios, written by Morrison with art by Dan Mora, Klaus reimagines one of the biggest cultural myths in history.

Set in a dark fantastic past of myth and magic, Klaus tells the story of how Santa Claus really came to be. Where did he begin? What was he like when he was young? And what happens when he faces his greatest challenge? Drawing on Santa Claus' wilder roots in Viking lore and Siberian shamanism—taking in the creepier side of Christmas, and characters like the sinister Krampus—Klaus is "Santa Claus: Year One."

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel reading a tale like this. I'm one of those really annoying people that enjoys commercial Santa stuff. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting and complex Morrison's story is. While most Santa Claus stories have a certain kind of heart to them, this one does as well. However, it's a different kind of heart-a more developed, realistic, brave-heart. Also, Mora's art is something out of a painting. Just as a little side-note…his wolf Lilu is definitely one of my favorite parts of the storyline. After reading the first issue, I feel like this story is going to be added to many readers Christmas collection. I can't wait to see what happens next. Be sure to pick up your copy of Klaus #1 this week.
