Did Jessica Jones Get The Healthcare Daredevil Didn't?

I picked up an intriguing titbit at New York Comic Con from a connected source regarding the production on both Marvel Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

That the deal for the writers on the Daredevil show was slipped in just under the wire before the newer, more favourable streaming television deals for members of the Writers Guild kicked in. Previously, they were seen as the equivalent of the Lost webisodes, rather than fully formed drama in their own right. Now, if a production has a standard budget of TV dramas, they have to pay standard WGA rates.

While shows like Orange Is The New Black, who also did got their contracts signed before new deals, pay the full whack because they don't want to look bad or get a poor reputation, Marvel doesn't care how it looks. People still want to write Marvel, whatever. And until 2024, Marvel does not have to pay the same rates it would pay for regular TV shows. The Writers Guild sent out a note warning writers, as Marvel seem to pay around 75% of the standard TV fee.

Good business sense? Maybe. As long as no one gets sick, that is. Because, for a cherry on top, while the writing work on Daredevil would taken a few months, the payments were spread out weekly over more than a year.

Why? Well, it meant that while they amounted to the same total, they were low enough each month to avoid Marvel paying healthcare.

I understand that showrunner Michelle Rosenberg explicitly made sure that no such extra fudges were employed on Jessica Jones – an edict that carried over onto Daredevil Season Two.
