NYCC '15: The Shadow Hunters Panel Recap

By Rich Epstein

ABC Family took to New York Comic Con to introduce their new series Shadow Hunters to the world.  Most of the cast was on hand along with executive producer and director of the pilot episode McG and creator of the Mortal Instruments book series, Cassandra Claire.

The panel opened with the first six (6) minutes of pilot, where Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) first discovers the world of the Shadow Hunters, part-angels that nobody can see but Clary.  She follows Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood) into a club, only to get pulled into a fight with Jace, Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia), and Alexc Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) against a group of human-looking beings that disintegrate upon death.

After the clip it was time for questions for the cast and crew.  Some of the highlights:
McG directly addressed the less-than spectacular movie adaptation of the Mortal Instruments, telling the fans that "we wanted to get it right."

The cast had a lot of respect for Isiah Mustafa, who plays Luke Garroway. Sherwood called him "a genuine beautiful soul in this world" and said he looks up to Isiah. Cassandra Claire said that the character was based on her own stepfather, and that her mother was thrilled that her husband was being played by the Old Spice Man.

Alberto and Emanaude talked about how great it was as Latin actors to be given roles that were not necessarily written with a particular race in mind. Alberto is playing Simon, a character of Jewish heritage.

Harry Shum Jr. and Matthew Daddario talked about how important it was to play LGBT characters that weren't caricatures.

The cast bonded through weeks of intense physical training before the filming began.

Emanaude was attracted to how the women characters in the show bond with each other, and how her character takes Clary under her wing instead of being threatened.

The show will debut on January 12, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC Family.
