NYCC '15: A Gritty, Dark Look At Daredevil Season Two With The Punisher And Elektra

Marvel's Jeff Loeb showed us a trailer and clip package for season two of Daredevil but before he started the actual panel he apologized to Netflix for doing what he was about to do and he ran off stage. He came back with Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter and Michael Colter and said this is the first look at The Defenders while the crowd went completely wild. He rushed them off the stage as fast as he could and returned to introduce the Daredevil cast starting with Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Elodie Young as Elektra who then joined Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hanson on stage. First season writers Marco Ramierez and Doug Petrie are now the show runners for season two alongside executive producer Joe Quesada.  They said to us: You wanted gritty. You wanted dark. Here's Elektra and Punisher.  We love two things..one of them is Matt Murdock and the other is the world that Matt Murdock navigates, now with Punisher and Elektra we get to take it further. We will get even darker and more emotional.

The footage we saw was so intense and dark, absolutely beautiful and exciting. It looks like they are absolutely not exaggerating when they said it would be more gritty and more dark. One of the highlights was seeing the new characters for the first time and Jon Bernthal discussed what it was like to be given the role of The Punisher. He said he knows how much Punisher means to fans and to law enforcement, and that he is going to do his very best to fulfill the expectations and hopes fans have.

When she was being considered for the role Elodie Young was asked by Loeb if she really knew martial arts to which she replied, "Yes. Basically I can kick your ass." Enough said.

Deborah Ann Woll was asked by a fan if the romance between Karen and Matt was going to continue. She said, "Yeah. Absolutely. I don't know how far I can go without talking about specifics but Charlie Cox over here is one of my favorite people I have ever gotten to work with he is absolutely an incredible actor, the kind of person who you can interrupt, who can hear what you say and respond and it's been a privilege."

Charlie Cox was asked about his experience having this role and he spoke about his apprehension towards playing a character without fear and how that has the potential to be very boring to watch. "The thing I've learned the most from working with these amazing people and from playing this extraordinary character courage. How much courage it takes to be a vulnerable human but also a vulnerable super hero and it's been a cool journey to be on."

A fan asked about Cox's experiences playing a blind individual.  Cox spoke of the challenges of acting because from a practical point of view it's difficult to do scenes without looking each other in the eye.  He was given an award from the American Association for the the Blind and has worked with them which has been rewarding and such a blessing he never expected. "It's one of the things I love about the Daredevil, he is one of the few superheroes who has a disability."

Another fan asked about preparing for this aspect of the role and Cox talked about his training with consultant Joe Strechey where at one point he was blindfolded and being led around Manhattan by Strechey, who is blind…..so it was a literal case of the blind leading the blind. They worked on the K technique and daily life like household chores where Cox burned his hand badly trying to make a cup of tea.  He said this allowed him to find an authenticity for the role and is something they continue to work on as needed.

The show runners were asked if we would have flashbacks, a question they mostly avoided by saying that the actors are so talented that they are sometimes able to peel back the layers of the onion, or the characters, more effectively during a scene of two people talking to each other.

We do not have a release date but Daredevil does return in 2016 and I think it's going to be incredible based in what I saw at NYCC.
