NYCC '15: Greg Rucka On Star Wars Shattered Empire #1 Cover – Not The Book He'd Pitched To Write

ShatteredEmpire

This was the cover to the Star Wars: Shattered Empire comic from Marvel, written by Greg Rucka. The only problem was, it wasn't the comic book he was writing.

At New York Comic Con's Star Wars publishing panel, he told of his reaction to it being "That's not even what I proposed to write."

This divided love story during the battle that follows Return Of The Jedi, then saw some more of the more familiar characters added to that first issue so as not to disappoint the readers. And he appreciated writing Chewbacca and Han as the opportunity came at a tough time in his life. He does feel a real responsibility tackling the property and the characters as they mean so much to people. "When you encounter Star Wars, you're infected for life, you're a carrier."

And we can look to issue 4 of Shattered Empire for our first look at post-Return Of The Jedi Luke Skywalker, as a full Jedi. Rucka loves that Qui-Gon is at peace in The Phantom Menace, and wanted to bring that approach to Luke. Indeed he takes on Phantom haters because of hs love for the Qui-Gon meditation scene in the final duel…
