How Will Bungie Keep Building The Threat In Destiny?

destiny_the_taken_king_oryx_screengrabDestiny has a huge universe with more aliens to shoot than you can fathom. However, as the game has progressed, one thing I've found interesting is the new 'big bads' that have emerged. First we had the vague Darkness, then the Hive god Crota and now, Oryx, Crota's dad (so I guess dad-god?), has been and gone. There really does seem to be a sense of power creep in the universe in terms of threats attacking the Guardians.

Right before The Taken King came out, I was invited out to a launch party for the expansion. While there, I got to sit down with Senior Designer Ryan Paradis and Game Designer Jacob Benton where we tackled this directly. How do you keep the threat ramping up?

JB: That is what is fun about a Sci-fi universe. You are not limited to what we know, or what we understand. Crota's Dad Oryx comes from another solar system, some far away land.

RP: We're not even limited to the planets we have in our solar system

JB: Yeah, the Dreadnaught is something from another location. In the universe we're trying to build there are endless opportunities for bigger and badder threats and it is just up to the players to confront those threats.

I'm sure it is an inevitability that somewhere down the line we will look at Oryx as somewhat of a minute threat, as we get more and more 'bad dudes' trying to claim the Tower and humanity. I hope Bungie just keep a sense of perspective on them going forward.
