The Prospector: An All-Ages Review Of An All-Ages Comic

Ashleigh Jay reported this year from Denver Comic Con, and now takes on the first year of Kansas City Comic Con. She is 12 years old. Since Kansas City makes a particular point of advertizing the "all-ages" experience at their con, it's great to have a direct report from a young person about the convention's debut show. Here she reviews The Prospector and other indie comics by Darren Neely that she picked up at the con.

I have recently finished a comic called The Prospector. The Prospector is a comic written by Darren Neely. I met him at Kansas City Comic Con. The comic is self-published and the first five issues are collected into a trade paperback.

Mr. Neely was very enthusiastic about the book. He described it as a cross between Johnny Quest and Indiana Jones. It was an entertaining read that took you on a science fiction-like adventure. There were twists and turns throughout. The Prospector tells of an archaeology dig that has a lot more story to it than meets the eye. The tale becomes wound around a professor at an institute, a man who has been a funder of the institute, and a science club that is about more than just science.

p1coverI think The Prospector is a good read for people in search of an adventure story. The end builds up more anticipation as you go. Darren Neely's writing and Philip Burnett's art go well together. "The Prospector" also has a website you can visit: www.the-prospector.com

Darren Neely has also written two other comics, Eddie the Yeti and Amber Harvest. (These were also self-published.) Eddie the Yeti is about a football team that keeps losing and needs another player, so Eddie is added to the team. The team does better and Eddie becomes popular. This story is good for people of all ages. I thought it was really fun.

Mr. Neely described Amber Harvest as a horror story set on a farm. A girl is returning to the farm for her brother's birthday and she brings her friend from college back with her. I did not enjoy this story as much as Neely's other tales, but it might just not have been my type of story.
