If Only Ferguson Was Really Like Action Comics

On the anniversary of the shooting of the unarmed teenager Michael Brown by a policeman in Ferguson in the USA, there have been more protests. One teenage was shot, hospitalised and arrested, after he is alleged to have shot at an unmarked police car, after a nearby shooting.

Elsewhere, a group of young black men were attacked and arrested by police on suspicion of firearm possession (no weapons were found) while a group of white militiamen, armed with rifles and wearing body armour and camouflage say they were granted permission to walk through the protests by police.

And this week, we see the publication of Action Comics #43. The previous issue was already highlighted by Fox News last week, who saw it as telling a parallel story to Ferguson, with Superman attacking the police as they attempt to break up a protest in his neighbourhood and burn down the buildings to avoid, well, alien cooties. Which culminated in Superman's assault against the commanding officer.

Which is where, finally, Superman gets a break.

Because the police officer is also not human, he's a shadow alien thing doing dastardly deeds. Which means it is perfectly okay now for Superman to do this.

AC-43-5-0bda8It's a lot easy to deal with a rogue policeman, a "bad apple", when he is a nine foot Shadow Thing with claws. The real problem police aren't quite as easily defined… but even when one is defined as a walking, killing monster, they are still protected by their colleagues…
