What Is Going On With The Spider-Man Casting?

The_Amazing_Spider-Man_2_costumeWith all these Spider-Man casting rumors, it's starting to feel a lot like last summers Dr. Strange rumors with multiple names flying around and reports of deals being eminent and then more names popping up while others are supposedly knocked off the list. Add the complication that the casting is being done by two studios: Marvel and Sony, and it's bound to be a mess.

A few weeks back we got a report that Asa Butterfield was a lock and was in contract negotiations. Now he seems to be out of the picture all together.

Then on Thursday, The Walking Dead actor Chandler Riggs posted an image to twitter along with saying "good luck to whoever lands spiderman role – it would've been awesome for me!"

So obviously the original report of Butterfield's casting was wrong or got derailed. Then yesterday word got out from Jeff Sneider (The Wrap) while on Meet The Movie Press that the list was down to three: Tom Holland (Wolf Hall), Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire), and Matthew Lintz (Kill the Messenger). But Marvel and Sony were divided as Marvel wanted Plummer and Sony wanted Holland… which has to make Lintz feel great.

Then later in the day, Birth Movies Death reported from their source at Sony that there is no conflict with Marvel over the casting and the short list is only two names… Tom Holland and Charlie Rowe (The Golden Compass).

So that is the latest as of Saturday morning as I write this. The only thing for sure that I can confirm is that I am not going to be playing Spider-Man… And just because a name has been "removed" from the list, keep in mind that Benedict Cumberbatch had been removed from the list to play Dr. Strange.

Filming of Captain America: Civil War has begun and Spider-Man is said to make his debut there. So the odds are we'll get an actual casting announcement soon.
