Happy 800th Birthday This Monday, Magna Carta

unnamedNext Monday is the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta, the document that constrained the reign of King John and preserved the rights of the English baronies at the time and of the Church Of England, it also had the effect of guaranteeing fair justice to all. Kater annulled, stripped for parts and watered down versions used in later legislation, it was later incorporated into English law and has, in the centuries since, been seen as a cornerstone for human rights and curtailing the power of government and monarchy upon the populace and was a heavy influence on the American Constitution and civil rights movements across the world. I'm planning to take the girls to see one of the copies on exhibition in London next weekend.

But, before then I'll be picking up a copy of this weekend's Sunday Times, which will have a cartoon history of the influence of the document by Christopher Lloyd and Andy Forshaw, of which the above illustration is a part.

The kids should like it, they know all about Magna Carta, they've seen it in Horrible Histories
