Experiencing The Apocalypse's Ticking Clock In Broken World #1

unnamed1-600x910

BOOM! Studios new sci-fi thriller Broken World releases this week. Written by Frank J. Barbiere, with art by Christopher Peterson, the creative team brings us a survival adventure series that explores the lives of people left behind on the last days of Earth. The story specifically follows Elena Marlowe, whose family was approved by the government to escape to a giant spaceship headed to another planet before a meteor hits Earth. The only problem is, her application was denied due to her mysterious past. With the meteor fast approaching, Elena tries desperately to find a way to fake her way onto the last ship or else be left behind to die with the rest of Earth's rejected.

When I first met Elena, I was immediately drawn to her character's tough personality. It's always a good feeling when you get that sense right off the bat. Something else that struck me immediately was Barbiere's sophisticated script. He writes in a thorough way, balancing out all of the important information we need to know in a tasteful way. Plus, Peterson illustrates beautiful detailed panels that really enhance the power of the story. The alarm that I felt when I read reminded me of the movie Independence Day. Even though Broken World is based on people leaving Earth, instead of creatures invading, you still have this panicked ticking clock in the back of your head as you read. I will say that when I first read the description I got a lone wolf vibe. Even though there was mention of Elena's family, I kind of mentally prepared myself to read a comic about one woman's journey. I was pleasantly surprised when I found her amongst a few other pivotal characters besides her family. Elena is a professor, and she shares a bond with her students. One student in particular, Emma, caught my attention. I won't give too much away, but I look forward to learning more about her in future issues.

In the end, the whole issue is intense and emotional. If you're a fan of survival stories, I would definitely hop on the Broken World train with me.
