Snake Might Not Talk Much In Metal Gear Solid V – PC Release Date Later Than Console Versions

Metal Gear Solid 5

Kiefer Sutherland taking over the role of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has been well publicized. (See: lamented by fans who loved David Hayter's performance in early games.)

In an interview with game director Hideo Kojima, IGN revealed that it may end up being a fairly null point. According to Kojima, Snake might end up being pretty quiet in this game.

I've said it many times, but I understand why people feel Snake is cool and admire him. In realty, though, Snake is and always has been nothing more than an extension of the player. He's your alter ego. Therefore, I made a very conscious effort this time to bring Snake closer to the player's perspective. As much as possible, Snake will act based on the player rather than doing things like making spontaneous comments or flirting with women.

In fact, this time, Snake won't really speak much at all. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an open world game focused on giving freedom to the player who will drive Snake's actions. Snake himself will be more of a silent protagonist similar to Mad Max in Mad Max 2. It's the characters around him who will expand the story.

Kojima has indeed said that before, but Snake has always felt pretty chatty to me. He certainly has a defined character at least. At some point, you do have to wonder, how much of Sutherland's budget came into this. Maybe that isn't the issue, maybe it is. Who knows?

We will find out on September 1st.

Or, rather September 15th if you are on PC. This is just a little clean up from yesterday. One thing that did get lost to the wind amid the leaked release date was the PC specific one. That version will launch two weeks after the console versions. Annoying sure, but lets face it. Judging by the speed of most PC ports, it could have been much worse.
