Travel Back To The 1930s With Jonathan Case's The New Deal

Get ready to journey to an iconic era of American History. Dark Horse will be releasing a graphic novel this coming Fall from Eisner Award winner, Jonathan Case, entitled The New Deal. Set in the 1930s and the Depression era of New York City, Case will explore class misconceptions, racial tension, and more through the eyes of a bellhop and a maid in the Waldorf Astoria.

Case shared his thoughts on this story by saying,

It's a fun opportunity because of the comedy caper and crime aspect. It's seen through these characters that are on the outside of everything that's happening in the social scenes. It's a really interesting time period, set in 1935, 1936, and there's a wealth of economic and social conflicts, and exciting things happening at that time, like women's rights and race relations. Even though it's a comedy and it's played mostly for whimsical laughs, I get to explore some of those things I'm interested in.

The story will follow a woman named Nina, who checks into the iconic hotel with a high society entourage. But when the bellhop Frank, and maid Theresa get caught up in a series of mysterious thefts, the stakes grow, and the pair must rely on each other to discover the truth. Sounds like an intense plot to me! I couldn't be more excited for this graphic novel. I love that Case chose this time period as the background to his story, and I feel enthusiastic that the two main characters have the jobs that they do. Readers will no doubt get a different perspective that will surely be entertaining. The New Deal will release on September 23, 2015.
