Uncharted 4's Animation Is 'Close To Film Now' Says Artist

Uncharted 4For many game developers, especially in the AAA space, the pursuit for realism is a real driving force artistically. The strive to utilize the power of hardware to create life like avatars while rendering them in ultra high fidelity environments can drive an entire game's production.

I'm a subscriber to the idea that art direction trumps 'life like' in every case, but Naughty Dog have always confounded me with some of their highly textured character models.

That tradition is going to continue in Uncharted 4. The game obviously has the new PlayStation 4 hardware to work off of and the developer is making sure to utilize it. Speaking to CG Master Academy (Transcribed by Gamespur), Naughty Dog's lead character artist Frank Tzeng talked about that realism in the animation.

Game quality is really close to film right now, look at the stuff we do in Naughty Dog. This character, I'm telling you guys, this character can easily be a digital double in a film. Based on the quality, the detail, the blend shape, the colour, everything that we put on the character [Uncharted's Nathan Drake] this is basically a film character to me. So to me, videos games are getting really close to film quality, and this is exactly what I wanted to do.

Tzeng is talking about animation in films for the record. I don't think we are talking photo-realism just yet, but even so, the visuals in Uncharted 4, from what we've seen, sure do look stunning.
