Mass Effect 4 Won't Take Too Many Cues From Dragon Age: Inquisition

mass-effect-3-the-real-female-shepardToo often a game's success can turn into a poisoned chalice. When a title does well, it is bound to have imitators close behind. You can also see this osmosis of mechanics in games, even most prominently in a developer and publisher's own titles. "Well it worked that time, so let's do it again." In most cases it dilutes that initial good idea and turns it into something detestable.

That is why I'm happy to see Bioware won't be taking many cues from Dragon Age: Inquisition when designing Mass Effect 4. Speaking on the NeoGAF forums Bioware's general manager Aaryn Flynn said:

We've said the next Mass Effect (and our new IP, but I won't expand on that yet) uses some of the technology from DAI. We've been enjoying building larger areas that you can explore with less friction, so that'll be there as well. But after that, the next Mass Effect will be (and should be) drawing on its own rich and successful past more than what DAI would say it should do.

We're very proud of what DAI has achieved, but that does not set a "template" for what every other game we make needs to be.

This isn't too surprising. Bioware actually seem to have a very good understanding of their franchises and see where one ends and another begins. While conversation trees, expansive locations and relatable characters are shared between the games, that comparison pretty much end there.

The two play completely differently and have their own distinct flavours. I'd hate to see them bleed into each other, but I trust Bioware enough to understand that. This quote has only convinced me further.
