Gabe Newell Reinstates Hatred Onto Steam Greenlight

HatredI've made my feelings on Hatred pretty clear before. The game focuses on killing innocent civilians in an anger fueled outburst, mimicking killing sprees that pop up from time to time in the news. I think the subject matter is tasteless and controversial for the sake of controversy's sake, but I recognize its right to exist and the customer's right to buy it.

The game had been back in the news recently when it appeared on the start-up platform, Steam Greenlight. It didn't take long for Valve to step in and pull it from the service though, sending the internet into a flurry of whether they were right to do so.

Today the story has taken another turn as Valve Managing Director Gabe Newell has stepped in to reinstate Hatred on the service. In an email to Destructive Creations, which they shared via Facebook, Newell explained that he thought the company had made the wrong choice in pulling the game down.

Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn't up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that. It turns out that it wasn't a good decision, and we'll be putting Hatred back up. My apologies to you and your team. Steam is about creating tools for content creators and customers.

Good luck with your game.

The game is now number one on Steam Greenlight as voted for by fans, proving that the game is finding an audience. If the market wants it in such large numbers, who's to say otherwise? I feel like this was probably the right choice in the end. Although, I do wonder how many people are actually excited about playing the game and how many are just using it as a symbol against political correctness and 'censorship'. We likely won't know until the game comes out later down the line and we see user reviews and sales.
