Getting Awesome On Record Store Day

By Christopher Helton

Sometimes I am a poor comic geek, but most of the time I am an excellent music geek. There are a few record stores (yes, they're still around) in the St. Petersburg, FL area, but this morning I found myself waiting in the (relative) cold waiting for Daddy Kool Records to open. Why? They had copies of The Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1 on cassette, a special limited edition item that was available for the Black Friday edition of Record Store Day.

This may be the first time reporting on a friendly local record store for Bleeding Cool.

Record Store Day is a now twice-yearly event in April and on Black Friday. An idea to get people out of the malls and into their local independently owned record stores, Record Store Day offers limited editions of music on vinyl, compact disc and yes cassette tape. Everything from mainstream artists like The Beatles to lesser known musicians like Chelsea Wolfe have had Record Store Day offerings over the years. The first Record Store Day was on April, 19 2008 and now happens on the third Saturday of each April.

Unlike promotions like Free Comic Book Day, the Record Store Day offerings aren't freebies. As you can see from the picture, the Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1 was $9.99. The copies at Daddy Kool disappeared fast, but there might be a chance that copies are still around somewhere at another participating store. If you are a music fan, there are always leftovers and it is a good way to get yourself introduced to some new music. It is also a great way to support the local economy in an age when online retailers are grinding up more and more of the local book and music stores.
