Steamalot – Not To Be Confused With Spamalot

A great discovery was made today during my adventures throughout the show floor this morning; amidst photobombing cosplay photos (more on that later), I discovered a booth in its own little corner by the name of "Steamalot." It was at this booth that I not only made new friends, but found a brand new, completely addictive game that is totally fun and absolutely accessible.

Alliteration aside, the full title of the game is Steamalot: Epoch's Journey. I played the game for about a half hour and beat the first level, and I can say with confidence that I will most likely go home after the Con and download the game to my computer. Steamalot is pretty much the love child of Fire Emblem and a game of poker. How do you ask? The game's foundation is rooted deeply in strategy, much like Fire Emblem, meaning that each character you play can move a set number of spaces and possesses a designated attack range. Knights are beefy and hit hard, but have low accuracy; Archers are nimble and accurate, and can attack from further away. You know, typical RPG elements. However, what Steamalot does so well is that it takes the old and tired and gives it a refreshing facelift – like Joan Rivers. (Too soon?) You, the player, are dealt a card upon completion of every turn that can be used to augment and empower your characters. Play your cards right, and it will surely lead to victory. (And you can be awesome and beat the first level, like me.) Enemies, though, can also use the cards in their hands to heal or improve defenses, so you have to be wary of tactics and timing in order to be successful.

Overall, Steamalot: Epoch's Journey is a simple 8-bit game with a lot of potential, and if it drew me in for 30 minutes while surrounded by all the chaos that is the New York Comic Con, you know the game is a worthwhile venture. Steamalot: Epoch's Journey is available for download on PC and MAC.
