Today, Marvel Comics publish Thor #1 and Captain America #25. The later has the following cover.

Which may be surprising if you hadn't watched the Colbert Report. Or read a newspaper. Or read the announcements online. Or even read Bleeding Cool's earlier report. Which is something that Rick Remender totally embraces, revels in, rolls around in and hangs a massive lampshade on.

Brilliant. However, over in Thor, Jason Aaron takes a radically different approach. Despite this being the cover…

Jason doesn't acknowledge this at all, letting the new Thor be the big last page reveal of the book, as if no one knew this was coming, even though, as he new Thor says, it must have been inevitable.

Of course nothing is actually given away about the identity of the new Thor – and I understand it will be well into 2015 till we get an inkling.

But the first issue is almost a bait and switch as a result. It's not about the new Thor, it's about the world around old Thor, how he copes and how the world copes around him.

Both titles are interesting exercises into how a storyteller writes in such a commercial context, and an exercise for the audience as to how true this study is…

Thor #1 and Captain America #25 are published today by Marvel Comics. Comics courtesy of Orbital Comics, London. Currently exhibition the Scene & Heard work, with a Jeff Smith signing later in the month.
